Warning Description: Lake Effect Snow Warning
Warning Date: 4:34 am CST on November 19, 2008
WarningSum:...Lake Effect Snow Warning In Effect From 6 Pm This Evening To
6 Am Cst Friday...
Warning Message:The National Weather Service in Duluth has issued a lake effect
snow warning...which is in effect from 6 PM this evening to 6 am
CST Friday. The lake effect snow watch is no longer in effect.
10 to 13 inches of snow is possible Wednesday night into Friday
morning...mainly from far eastern Ashland County...into northern
Iron County. The Gile...Montreal...and Hurley areas will receive
the most snow. The city of Ashland and surrounding lower
elevations will receive less snow accumulation...ranging from 3 to 5
inches for the event. In addition to the snow...northwest winds will
be gusty at times causing some blowing and drifting.
A lake effect snow warning means significant amounts of lake-
effect snow accumulation are expected that will make travel very
hazardous or impossible. It is common for lake effect snow
accumulations and snowfall rates to vary greatly over very short
distances. Some locations may receive one to several inches of
snow per hour for a period of several hours...and strong winds
are likely to cause blowing and drifting snow. Near zero
visibility may occur in the heaviest snow showers. If you must
travel...be aware that you may become stranded and that it may
take many hours for help to arrive. Keep a winter survival kit in
your vehicle...including a flashlight...food...and water. Let
someone know your travel Route and expected arrival time and have
a working cell phone in case you become stranded.
